The Bootstrap Blog shares news about the bootstrap community updated by [[Contributor]]s who post directly to the blog. It is also a place where Bootstrap members can share their expertise and gain readers for their own blogs. Why blog? Well, [http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=the-healthy-type&sc=rss it's good for you]! But more than the purported health benefits, blogging serves as a way to lock in your own learning about whatever it is you write about. It also is a fantastic way to communicate with the outside world and evangelizing your product/service leveraging the Bootstrap Austin brand. If you aren't blogging for your business, perhaps this will help spur you on. Regardless of your stage, blogging is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to build credibility and notoriety for you and your venture.
==BD Tech Daily==

[http://www.bdtechdaily.com/ BD Tech Daily] is a daily email newsletter (see below) produced by Jason and his team at [http://www.abdmag.com/ Business District Magazine]. Bootstrap has a weekly post on Fridays, which also appears on the [http://www.bootstrapaustin.org/ Bootstrap Austin blog]. I kicked off the weekly posts last year with a series on the [http://www.bootstrapaustin.org/2007/09/5-stages-of-bootstrap-venture.html stages of bootstrapping] from [http://www.bootstrapaustin.org/2007/10/preideation-awaken.html Preideation], [http://www.bootstrapaustin.org/2007/10/ideation-demo.html Ideation], [http://www.bootstrapaustin.org/2007/11/valley-of-death-renamed.html Valley of Death], [http://www.bootstrapaustin.org/2007/11/growth.html Growth] and [http://www.bootstrapaustin.org/2007/11/rebootstrap.html Rebootstrap]. I concluded by describing bootstrapping as the [http://www.bootstrapaustin.org/2007/11/bootstrapping-third-way-of.html third way of entrepreneurship], integrating the best of the other 2 models, the cookie-cutter/franchise and the funding/VC. This was part of a year-long [http://www.abdmag.com/bijoy_testimonial.htm PR/Branding exercise] developed with Jason. If you want to do an extended PR/branding campaign similar to what we did for Bootstrap, look into Jason's [http://www.abdmag.com/welcome_to_a_new_paradigm.htm Get Fully Exposed] service with ABD Mag. This service is appropriate for companies in the Growth stage.

We are creating an opportunity for the bootstrap community's expertise to be heard with the ability to post to BD Tech Daily and the Bootstrap blog. See below for some of the past posts. Content varies from reporting on a Bootstrap Austin meeting, to reflecting on an aspect of bootstrapping. The idea is that you will promote bootstrapping/the community AND your business. Ideally, you give people a place to continue the conversation with you as [http://community.bootstrapnetwork.com/brianmassey Brian] did on his post on [http://www.bootstrapaustin.org/2008/01/if-you-selling-to-humans-you-got-to.html David Ansel], the Soup Peddler.

==Steps to Get your Post on Bootstrap Austin==

#Pick a date from the calendar below
#Create a post on a [http://www.google.com Google] doc. See Brian's post for pointers on content and format. Your post should be educational, relevant to some aspect of the bootstrap process and appeal to a broader business audience beyond the bootstrap community. You should also include a personal description at the end with appropriate links to you/your business. This is a promotional activity!
#Share your google/Word doc with me at along with the expected date: sendbijoynews AT gmail
#Go back and forth on editing
#Once it's good to go, we will add it to the queue and post it on the Thursday before the due date. If you have an existing post that you think would be appropriate send the link.

Those who have already blogged may post whenever you feel compelled!

== Breakout Session: IP Basics and Strategy for Bootstrappers ==

This is now listed as a '''Bootstrap Austin Initiative'''.

There was not sufficient interest in this last year to hold the session, but I have a thick skin and am willing to offer it again.

This session is tailored for Product Managers, but should be largely applicable to entrepreneurs and Bootstrappers, covering:<br>
- relating IP to the product manager's role (in many ways similar to an entrepreneur)<br>
- basic needs in IP management in all high tech companies<br>
- patent strategy considerations before - and parallel to - talking with a patent attorney

There is also a recorded [http://www.featureplan.com/community/2006/04/intellectual_property.asp webinar] I did for RymaTech a while back.

If anyone has any suggestions for providing some basic information on IP for Bootstrappers, please feel free to email me or post here:
==Relevance to Bootstrappers==
LES is the US and Canada part of an international organization ([http://www.lesi.org/ LESI]) of a wide variety of people involved in creating, managing, protecting, commercializing and licensing '''intellectual property'''. That includes business people, patent attorneys, litigators, specialty service organizations and consultants. LES members come from IT-related industries (software, electronics, Internet/Web, etc), healthcare and life sciences, chemicals/energy, consumer products and University licensing offices. On its [http://www.usa-canada.les.org/eventscalendar/ calendar], LES has several conferences during the year and special education programs in subjects such as Technology Transfer, Intellectual Asset Management, Valuation, Negotiation, etc. There are local [http://www.usa-canada.les.org/chapters/ chapters] including one here in [http://www.usa-canada.les.org/chapters/centraltx/ Austin] that is planning some workshops for late July and in the Fall.

Bootstrappers - or more accurately '''all''' business owners - need some appreciation of intellectual property. IP includes not only patents, but copyright, trademarks and trade secrets as well. Those assets and the intellectual capital ("know how" that allows you to operate you business and compete) that is not formalized into a form of IP needs to be managed well to:
- get maximum operational and commercial value from the IC/IP
- protect it in some respects from exploitation by your competitors
- avoid the trouble and expense of infringing the IP of others

As the Bootstrap Network's Ambassador to LES, Don is negotiating arrangements with LES to re-distribute to Bootstrap members some presentations, papers and other resource material produced by its members for its conferences and local chapter activities. More information will be posted here as this is worked out.

If you want to use or know more about the resources of LES, including identifying or contacting specific members in companies with which you want to do business, or you have some general questions about IP, please feel free to contact [mailto:don@digitalthinkinginc.com Don Jarrell].

Due to popular '''lack''' of demand :-) this breakout session has been '''cancelled'''. However ...

For anyone in Boostrap who is interested in the subject, I am giving an open-access webinar for RymaTech on this '''Wednesday, 19 April, at 11:00 am CDT'''. Participants should check software compatibility and access beforehand and be logged in by 10:45. The presentation will run 30-40 minutes, with a 15-20 minute Q&A period after the presentation

(OK, maybe this isn't the right place for this, but ...)

Bijoy has asked me to put together a breakout session on [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property intellectual property] covering some basic facts, dispelling some myths and common misunderstandings and talking about general IP and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent patent] strategies and licensing. I'd like to get some feedback on the proposaed topic coverage. Please provide input below.

I plan to cover (all) three interrelated topic areas:<br>
- IP basics (10 minutes)<br>
- relating IP to entrepreneurs (5 minutes)<br>
- basic needs in IP management in all high tech companies (15 minutes)<br>
- patent strategy considerations before - and parallel to - talking with a patent attorney (10 minutes)<br>

I may be able to get one or two patent attorneys to join us if we will get a good anticipated turnout, but please understand that in this setting they '''will not provide actual legal advice.
'''
If time allows, I would also like to get some roundtable discussion going on ''clarifying'' public discourse on problems with the "patent-sphere" (at least among Bootstrappers).

'''NOTE:''' I am NOT an attorney but have done a lot of IP work as both a Product Manager and IP consultant. Nothing during the session will be legal advice, and no specific individual needs will be covered. Do not post anything here, or discuss in the breakout session anything you expect to keep confidential.

'''Please add your name if you would be interested in attending such a session (time & location TBD)'''
